The above databases will be available through more than 5,500 public, school, academic and special libraries registered for NOVELNY and to individuals who are residents of New York State that visit novelnewyork.org and log on with a NYS driver license ID or a non-driver ID number. The NOVELNY Steering Committee subgroup charged with database evaluation provided advice and consultation throughout the process. April 29, 2011Twayne's Authors Moved to e-Book Platform Gale-Cengage Learning is moving Twayne’s Authors Series from a database format to the Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) eBook platform. Though the change will be effective after April 29, 2011, links to the previous format will continue to work until June 30. 1. If your library has direct links to the Twayne’s database in your catalog or on
your web site, the old links will continue to work through the end of June.
2. If your library does not link to Twayne's directly, nothing needs to be done. The new version will show up in the available databases when using a Gale product. Webinars regarding this change are scheduled in May and June. See the NOVELNY training page for a list of the sessions and instructions for participating. Further details on this change, including Gale-Cengage support information, is

Our shared electronic resources provide high-quality, timely and round-the-clock information to people across the state. This survey is designed to capture some of those everyday successes accomplished in all types of libraries using NOVELNY. We hope that you will take a few minutes to answer these 6 questions and then pass the survey on to others working with the NOVELNY Databases so they too, can participate. www.surveymonkey.com/s/novelny Thank you for your contribution in this process. Feedback from library communities is extremely important for NOVELNY to remain fresh and to continue to ensure that local informational needs are fully considered and met. If you have any questions or comments or just want to provide information that has not been covered by the survey, please feel free to contact me.

With just a few clicks, users can perform the search, choosing to query all NOVELNY databases or specific databases. (Note that this feature requires a NYS Driver License or Non-Photo ID number.) The first offering, commemorating Constitution Day on September 17, finds information relating to the United States Constitution. Try Hot Topic Search at: September 9, 2010Facebook Page for NOVELNY The New York State Library is pleased to announce the creation of a Facebook page dedicated to the NOVELNY statewide database pilot program. This program provides all New York State residents with free access to commercial databases containing information on various subjects, including health, business, and news. NOVELNY databases can be accessed through participating public, school, special and academic libraries, or directly using a New York State Driver License or Non-Driver Photo ID number. On the Facebook page, the Wall and Links tabs highlight training opportunities, new database features, database changes, and other news related to NOVELNY. The Info tab has links to background information on this statewide program, lists of databases by subject area, relevant information for students, educators, consumers and librarians, and how to get assistance with searching or database access. The Discussion area provides a forum for questions and comments relating to the program, and especially "success stories," featuring specific examples of how access to NOVELNY resources has benefited New York State residents. The Search! tab includes a search box for finding information in all the NOVELNY databases, as well as links to databases according to subject and vendor. The Facebook page can be accessed at: www.facebook.com/NOVELny All New York State residents are encouraged to 'Like' the page, make comments, and provide other feedback on the program. During the spring of 2008, the New York State Library arranged for a usability study of the NOVELny web site (novelnewyork.org). The study, conducted by an external research center, was concluded at the end of June, and detailed findings were reported to the State Library. The revised layout takes into account several of these findings, as well as comments received from the public over the past 15 months. The most significant enhancements are: NOVELny is a pilot project for the Statewide Internet Library, supported by the LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) program and the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Comments can be submitted online using the "Web site comments" link on the preview page, and questions or comments may also be directed to David Fiske at the State Library, Division of Library Development by calling 518-486-4857 or by email at dfiske@mail.nysed.gov. May 28, 2008The New York State Library is pleased to announce that the license agreement for EBSCO content included in NOVELNY, a pilot project for the Statewide Internet Library, has been extended through March 31, 2009. Call the NOVELNY Help Desk if additional help is needed. In renewing the Gale Cengage Learning contracts, New York State Librarian Janet M. Welch accepted the recommendation of NECAT (NOVELNY Electronic Collections Advisory Team). NECAT is the working group appointed by the NOVELNY Steering Committee and charged with recommending NOVELNY-supported electronic collections. From previous feedback it has been determined that databases in the subject areas of health, business and newspapers are desirable for NOVELNY. The best option at this time was to renew the contracts for the products offered by Gale Cengage Learning in those 3 areas. In addition to the primary databases offered by Gale Cengage Learning in each of those subject areas, the agreements include content attached to the primary license agreements by the vendor. The additional content is not always in the same subject as the primary database. In the list below, primary content is typed in all capital letters and attached additional content is typed using lower case letters. New titles/databases are denoted with an asterisk (*). The agreements include the following: Health:

It is a powerful virtual library that gives New Yorkers full computer access to thousands of national and international newspapers and magazines, health and medical magazines and resources, valuable business and investment information, and fun and educational material for adults and youngsters - all free via their local library. It connects New Yorkers in every community to state-of-the-art information without regard to economic, geographic, or physical barriers. The NOVELNY pilot opened a new era in library service, thanks to support from the LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) program and the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Over 5,000 libraries across the state have become subscribers. October 16, 2007New York State Library Releases Federated Search Pilot Report Janet M. Welch, State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries, announced today the availability of “Final Report of the New York State Federated Search Portal Pilot Project” on the New York State Library’s web site at www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/news/portal.htm. This report summarizes the results of a two-year pilot testing the application of WebFeat federated search software for the online collections of the New York State Library and the collections of the NOVELny pilot project. Upon the recommendation of the NOVELny Steering Committee, the New York State Library implemented a pilot program in 2005 to test federated search software. Federated search software allows users to simultaneously search across multiple online resources including databases and web sites. The pilot program used the software developed by WebFeat to test the application of federated search to the NOVELny collection of resources. Fourteen libraries and library systems participated in Phase 1 of the pilot, and four members of the Phase 1 group continued in Phase 2 to further test integration of their locally subscribed online resources with NOVELny databases in a single search. The Portal Pilot Project ended on August 31, 2007. The NOVELny Steering Committee reviewed evaluation reports from the two phases of the Portal Pilot in August and concluded that the Portal Pilot was a successful demonstration of the application of federated search technology. Federated search will continue at the New York State Library and on the NOVELny site www.novelnewyork.org. While cost considerations may limit its widespread adoption, the findings of the pilot program may be of interest to other libraries using, or considering implementation of, federated search. For more information and background on the report or the pilot project contact Liza Duncan, Principal Librarian Technical Services and Systems at lduncan@mail.nysed.gov.
