Jeffrey Cannell, Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education, is pleased to announce the electronic products constituting the NOVELNY (New York Online Virtual Electronic Library) statewide collection for July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. All products from the 2010/11 year are continued.

2011/2012 NOVELNY Databases:

  • EBSCO’s Primary Search (including Searchasaurus and Kids Search interfaces)
  • Gale’s Academic OneFile
  • Gale’s Business and Company Resource Center
  • Gale’s Health Reference Center Academic

The above databases will be available through more than 5,500 public, school, academic and special libraries registered for NOVELNY and to individuals who are residents of New York State that visit novelnewyork.org and log on with a NYS driver license ID or a non-driver ID number.

The NOVELNY Steering Committee subgroup charged with database evaluation provided advice and consultation throughout the process. Twayne's Authors Moved to e-Book Platform

Gale-Cengage Learning is moving Twayne’s Authors Series from a database format to the Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) eBook platform. Though the change will be effective after April 29, 2011, links to the previous format will continue to work until June 30.

    1. If your library has direct links to the Twayne’s database in your catalog or on your web site, the old links will continue to work through the end of June.

To adjust any direct links to Twayne's to the new format, see the example here.

    2. If your library does not link to Twayne's directly, nothing needs to be done. The new version will show up in the available databases when using a Gale product.

Webinars regarding this change are scheduled in May and June. See the NOVELNY training page for a list of the sessions and instructions for participating.

Further details on this change, including Gale-Cengage support information, is available at:
Twayne's Authors Migration FAQ page.

Seeking NOVELNY Success Stories

The NOVELNY Steering Committee is collecting success stories about library staff and patrons and their use of the NOVELNY databases. Our shared electronic resources provide high-quality, timely and round-the-clock information to people across the state. This survey is designed to capture some of those everyday successes accomplished in all types of libraries using NOVELNY. We hope that you will take a few minutes to answer these 6 questions and then pass the survey on to others working with the NOVELNY Databases so they too, can participate.

Thank you for your contribution in this process. Feedback from library communities is extremely important for NOVELNY to remain fresh and to continue to ensure that local informational needs are fully considered and met. If you have any questions or comments or just want to provide information that has not been covered by the survey, please feel free to contact me.

Quick Database Search Is Changing

Access to federated searching on the NOVELNY website (searching multiple NOVELNY journals and databases at the same time) will cease as of Monday, October 25. If you use the "Search All Resources" box under Quick Database Search on the home page, you will be taken to a page with options to search each database separately. The individual databases can also be accessed by clicking on "What's Included" at the top of the novelnewyork.org homepage. This decision was made after examining use of this feature on novelnewyork.org, and in consultation with the NOVELNY Steering Committee.

If you have any questions about this change please contact the NOVELNY Help Desk at 877-277-0250, 486-6012 [Capital District], or via e-mail at nyslnovel@mail.nysed.gov.

NOVELNY has a new feature: "Hot Topic Search"

Every few weeks, Hot Topic Search will offer "canned" searches that will retrieve articles on timely topics from NOVELNY databases. With just a few clicks, users can perform the search, choosing to query all NOVELNY databases or specific databases. (Note that this feature requires a NYS Driver License or Non-Photo ID number.)

The first offering, commemorating Constitution Day on September 17, finds information relating to the United States Constitution.

Facebook Page for NOVELNY

The New York State Library is pleased to announce the creation of a Facebook page dedicated to the NOVELNY statewide database pilot program. This program provides all New York State residents with free access to commercial databases containing information on various subjects, including health, business, and news. NOVELNY databases can be accessed through participating public, school, special and academic libraries, or directly using a New York State Driver License or Non-Driver Photo ID number.

On the Facebook page, the Wall and Links tabs highlight training opportunities, new database features, database changes, and other news related to NOVELNY.

The Info tab has links to background information on this statewide program, lists of databases by subject area, relevant information for students, educators, consumers and librarians, and how to get assistance with searching or database access.

The Discussion area provides a forum for questions and comments relating to the program, and especially "success stories," featuring specific examples of how access to NOVELNY resources has benefited New York State residents.

The Search! tab includes a search box for finding information in all the NOVELNY databases, as well as links to databases according to subject and vendor.

The Facebook page can be accessed at: www.facebook.com/NOVELny

All New York State residents are encouraged to 'Like' the page, make comments, and provide other feedback on the program. Libraries and library systems are encouraged to publicize this page. Consider making the NOVELNY Facebook page a 'Favorite Page' of your library or system's Facebook page! (Instructions available at: www.facebook.com/help/?faq=13079 )

More information on the NOVELNY Facebook page can be obtained from David Fiske, dfiske@mail.nysed.gov.

The NOVELNY pilot program is supported with temporary federal Library Services and Technology Act funds awarded to the New York State Library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
